Union Square Urban Design & Waterfront Activation

UC Studios translated neighborhood priorities into an urban-design framework addressing vacant and underused properties, housing, commercial activity, gateways, streetscape character, and public space. Pedestrian movement modeling helped identify more intuitive walking routes, safer crossings, and better links between neighborhood destinations and the waterfront. Microclimate analysis and wind-tunnel testing informed the placement, scale, and design of buildings and open spaces—helping create streets and gathering areas that are more comfortable, active, and usable throughout the year. Together, these strategies provided a practical basis for coordinated public improvements, private reinvestment, waterfront activation, and long-term community revitalization.
